2012 has been a good year for London's Monotreme Records, with Nedry's 'In a Dim Light' and Tomat's '01-06 June' having sold well and received critical acclaim. Celebrating ten years and one hundred releases in the music business, this compilation offers one new remix of Stumbleine and seventeen artists who have put out releases on Monotreme in the three last years. The label's catalogue ranges from math rock to dubstep and one man personifies this generous spectrum. As Niagara, Davide Tomat plays firm and melodic post-rock whilst as Tomat he plays electronica. Techno, dubstep and electronica music on the label's roster comes from the likes of Polinski and Nedry. A Monotreme record can be loud, yet the emphasis is often on the gentle side and in an odd way that can be stylish yet slightly boring such as with Stumbleine. Harmonious Bec's 'Arms Girl' hints at better things, while keeping Stumbleine's style. Jeniferever however play exciting dream pop. Fragile sounds come from Picastro, Aaron Stout, Barzin and the mysteriously delicious Reigns. The complex and clever pop music of M+A, Fops and NAMB - another outfit for Davide Tomat - build the core business for the label. The weakest I found to be the repetitive post-rock of This Will Destroy You. Perhaps the most advanced is the brostep type of electronic experiment, a different kind of brew of several substyles that altogether end in banging krautrock style, from the label's longtime stalwart 65daysofstatic.
