Monotonous 90’s-influenced indie guitar rock on debut album from London-based band, the Winter Olympics
It’s always interesting to listen to a band that you have never heard of before, and especially if you have no preconceptions whatsoever. The debut album by London five-piece The Winter Olympics is such a record for me. Having never even heard the band being mentioned anywhere, I put the CD into my CD-player and pressed the play button. ‘Regional Showcase’, the opening track, came out of the speakers. It sounded okay, a bit like mid-period Wedding Present, when David Gedge started writing songs that weren’t played at break-neck speed and when he went from growling to actually singing. Well, so far so good. But after a few tracks, I realized that the Wedding Present reference I made after hearing the first track sadly didn’t suit the rest of the album. Instead I tried to remember all those boring indie rock bands that tried to fill the arenas of the world during the 1990s, but luckily I had forgotten all about them. Until now. As a confirmation of my thoughts, the seventh song on the album is entitled ‘I Miss the Nineties’. Enough said. The Winter Olympics have been working on this album for ten years. Ten years! Oh, how I wish that they could have spent them more wisely…
