intro
Imitative and formulaic post rock on debut album from Bristol-based post-rock act,the Pirate Ship Quintet
The Pirate Ship Quintet are a septet - Zee, Jona, Alex, Alphie, Sandy, Moo and Terrence -rather than a quintet I stand to correct. Hard core will never die but you will, so come on die young! Despite coming from Bristol, the Pirate Ship Quintet are reminiscent of a certain young team from Glasgow, but without the gremlin touch however. The growing wall of sound first buries the contribution of the cellist but in the 11-minute opening track 'You're Next' he is given room to excel. There are spicy noodlings on 'Horse Manifesto' and 'Dennis Many Times'. The meandering sound of post-rock is only highlighted by the cellist who wishes to remain little known but there are moments of Led Zeppelinalia towards the end. A sense of suspense forces the listener to press ahead, yet 'Rope for No-Hopers' takes its blueprint from the band's Glasgow tutors. Despite trying to be unsettling, there are few arresting moments
