intro
Sublime orchestral pop on debut solo album from former Parenthical Girls multi-instrumentalist and Seatle-based musician, Jherek Bischoff
With his former band Parenthetical Girls, Jherek Bischoff proved that he had the knack for writing grand pop music. Now surrounded by guest vocalists, one can imagine sitting in a big Vienna concert hall where, by accident, a chamber music ensemble is performing. The album's international cast includes David Byrne, Caetano Veloso, Carla Buzolich and SoKo amongst others. The overwhelming orchestration comes to a fine climax when Bischoff himself sings in the great soul music tradition while Nels Cline on guitar provides subtle sonics as the symphonic turns to cacaphonic. When on 'Counting', which features Carla Buzolich, the music becomes a genuine waltz, I am inclined to stand up, cheer and start the applause. The theatrical effects are unashamedly full-on. The apotheosis features Dawn McCarthy on 'Insomnia, Death and the Sea' which sounds like a collaboration made in heaven. The numerous big gestures on 'Composed' are very well dosed. Neoclassical pop music par excellence!
