intro
Compelling second album from the Bersarin Quartett, the project of German graphic and sound designer, Thomas Bucker
Most evenings when I go to bed, I like to listen to a little music to relax me. Mainly it’s low-beat electronica, ambient or drone. This has led me down the well-travelled pathways of the Orb, Aphex Twin, Marconi Union, Oophoi – you get the idea. None of them, however, was completely satisfying. Finally, with this release, I have found an album which I am completely happy with. The Bersarin Quartett is the alias of Thomas Bücker, a graphic and sound designer from Münster and his work is, to me at any rate, breath-taking. This album, Bücker’s second as The Bersarin Quartett, is a sonic trip through floating textures and networks of dream space which both engages the listener and allows the mind to wander unfettered. The album’s twelve tracks are bold and emphatic, and yet never rise above a whisper. This is an album made for darkened rooms, but darkened rooms where shadowy corners are meant to be explored rather than feared, where the monsters under the bed are as likely to lead you on a wonderful adventure as they are to feast on fearful children. The atmosphere of the album as a whole is that of a sonic hinterland, music from the very source of imagination and creativity. It’s the sort of album that one could easily find oneself completely lost within. This album is one which I imagine I will be playing every night for a long, long time to come. For fans of ambient music, this is an absolutely essential purchase. It’s only April, but this will almost certainly be one of my top albums of 2012. Now, to the record store – I have a back catalogue to buy.
