intro

Fantastic Smiths-influenced indie pop on new EP from My Laundry Life, the nom de plume for German musician Andrew Daners

‘Estefania, the Great’ is the first new release of the new year by Edition 59, and, like the other releases on the German label, comes on 3 inch CD in a limited edition of a mere 59 copies. My Laundry Life is the brain child of Andre Daners. On this the latest chapter in the band history, he has given us another four songs of quality indie pop that this world is not worthy of. The first track, ‘To Set Things Right’, has the rhythm of the Smiths’ ‘Big Mouth Strikes Again’. In Andre, you have the vocal style of one Steven Patrick, and the great guitar work of Johnny Marr, all wrapped up in one person. This number is a call to rise your arms in the air and rejoice for life’s not so bad after all. ‘The title track, ‘Estefania the Great’, has a similar acoustic swagger to ‘Psycho Killer’ to it, while the vocals are heartfelt and yearning for that something that is better in that big wide world out there. ‘Jealous and Unkind’ is as breezy as a summer's day, and is backed by a slow Inspiral Carpets-style organ-backed beat. ‘Money Greedy’ ends the EP and is co-sung by Andre with a guest vocalist called Sarah. This sounds like a slice of 60’s melodramatic folk of the kind that is shown late at night at weekends on BBC4, The marriage of both vocals is perfect, while Sarah's vocals are akin to that of Judy Collins or Sandy Denny. A fabulous EP.
