intro
Ambient and haunting side album from pioneering German nugaze producer Ulrich Schnauss and Mark Peters, both of whom are also members of the group Engineers
Ulrich Schnauss and Mark Peters are both members of the band Engineers. This album is a small side project recorded at home. Ulrich is also the godfather, remixer and legend that is the sign of good quality for nugaze, and ‘Underrated Silence’ is an album of textured delights, very ambient, haunting, and which retains some of shoegaze’s earlier pleasures. It opens with ‘The Messiah is Falling’, a track that is charming and elegant with a large cinematic feel that puts your mind into an instantly higher state, but without the need for drugs. ‘Long Distance Call’ is light but hypnotic. It washes over you like a Slowdive number, yet avoids becoming too heavy on the effect peddles. ‘Forgotten’ is reminiscent of an oddball the Cure or Depeche Mode. With vocals from Judith Beck that add a little girl lost feel, it works well within its gothic landscape. ‘Yesterday Didn't Exist’ is an ambient chill-out number with the feel of another world feel. Softly played, it rocks like a new born baby to sleep. ‘Rosen in Asphalt’ is a soft flowing soundscape that is again easy on the ears, while ‘The Child or the Pigeon’, which is strangely reminiscent of Ian McNabb's ‘Great Dreams of Heaven,’ is a much more upbeat number. ‘Ekaterina’ falls between the moody soundscapes of the Cure and Slowdive's darker waves, while ‘Amoxicillin’ is a slow, but hypnotic piece that crawls along but sucks you in totally. ‘Gift Horse's Mouth’ is like an updated version of Jean Michel Jarre’s ‘Oxygene’ for this century. The title track ends this album, of mostly instrumental chill out nugaze, and, again reminiscent of Slowdive, like the rest of this album takes you on an amazing trip.

Album of electronica-dominated instrumentals from former Engineers Ulrich Schnauss and Mark Peters is a sleek but disappointing construction. |
