intro
Slow burning and subtle second album from New York brother and sister folk duo, This Frontier Needs Heroes
New York Brother and sister duo Brad and Jessica Lauretti found critical acclaim with a self-titled debut album two years ago, but not as large a fanbase as they’d probably hoped for. Luckily, those who did seek out their first album decided they’d happily pay for another, and the Laurettis were able to fan-fund the recording of a second. This time, they relocated to an old house in upstate New York. It has proven a wise move, with the ‘live feel’ sound breathing life into slow and maudlin compositions. For the most part the instrumentation is simple, but there are enough subtle embellishments and occasional harmonies to hold your interest. Most of the singing comes from brother Brad, while sister Jessica generally adds just backing harmonies or a very occasional line of her own. Brad’s voice is not dissimilar to My Morning Jacket’s Jim James or Damian Jurado. Neil Young is also clearly an influence. Most of the songs here combine folk sounds with indie atmospherics, and the songs unfurl slowly. A couple of stand-out songs, however, take us beyond this template. 'Key West' is a sixties styled ditty, while 'Just Because'has a beautiful combination of recorder and violin, from two guest musicians. ‘The Future’ ends pleasantly, with some whistling and a bit of harmonica. Although much of the album is slow burning, there are enough instantly likeable moments to encourage you to come back for more.
