intro
Magnificent combination of dubby weirdness and nearly catchy melodies on lo-fi second album from husband-and-wife duo, Peaking Lights
Licensed from the Not Not Fun label in the USA comes the second album from Peaking Lights, a married couple now residing in Wisconsin. When '936' was recorded in Iowa, Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis still lived in the Bay Area on the West Coast. 936 is the area code for counties in Texas, and thus I know of no logical explanation for the album title. Triple three, single three and double three might be it, so hence it's on Weird World. Now that we've had our share of topography, let us look further into Peaking Lights. Their 'Imaginary Falcons' debut was a fragile excursion through soundscapes of radio interferences blended with melody lines from genuine instruments, yet on '936' we hear Indra sing on a few occasions, and on 'Amazing and Wonderful' first, which is indeed just that. Even on CD many tracks bear a vinyl kind of sound quality, analogue like in messy dub music, sort of as if the late King Tubby was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and had joined in these recordings. Nonetheless Peaking Lights brew a magnificent album from all those wishy-washy ingredients. 'All The Sun That Shines' sounds both clumsy as well as lovely. Sketchy at times, Peaking Lights melt their sense of pop music with drone-like patterns. Quarrelsome on the penultimate 'Marshmellow Yellow' track, the indifference in Indra's vocals now starts to matter though. Fully dazed and confused, almost going amist, Peaking Lights manage to combine dubby weirdness and nearly catchy melodies. '936' is certainly a peculiar mixture of home recordings. Whilst aiming at the whimsical lo-fi noodling hordes, Peaking Lights have their little stories to tell to the outside world.
