intro

Formulaic first album in six years of over-discordant Sonic Youth-influenced from Brighton-based trio, I'm Being Good

Brighton trio I’m Being Good have been around since the late 1990s, releasing their first album 'Poisonous Life' back in 1998. Since then, they have been plying their trade in alternative-tuning, discordant post-rock noise and channelling it into five studio albums - 'Mountain Language' being their latest. It’s been six years between their last effort ('Family Snaps') and this one, and I have to say I was hoping their sound might have adapted a bit more in that time. I don’t think bands should have to constantly change their sound or anything – or even necessarily at all – but I think even the most ardent Sonic Youth fans would agree that their more drone-heavy, experimental tracks are a little bit trying at times, and I would say that I’m Being Good take a lot of influence from those. That might not be a problem if the songs weren’t so long (only one, ‘Nanoparty’, is less than four minutes, and that’s 3:59). I like a bit of noise every now and then, but I tend to lose interest in extended experimental discord sessions around the three minute mark. Undoubtedly there are many people who would really enjoy this album, and it’s definitely not without it’s moments; the band are clearly talented and know what they are doing – but that’s kind of my problem with 'Mountain Language'. I’m Being Good are very well practised in producing albums like this, because they’ve been making them to the same formula since 1998. Personally, I’d like to see a bit more of an evolution in sound in that time.
