intro
We profile our next London Penny Black Music Bands' Night, which will take place on Saturday October 29th at the Half Moon in Herne Hill, South London and feature sets from Morton Valance, Madam, the Doomed Bird of Providence and Rome Pays Off
MORTON VALENCE Brixton-based Morton Valence are a five-piece whose songs remain quintessentially British (despite having only two native Englanders among their number), right down to referencing a certain Sham 69 song. Released on their own label – the charmingly named Bastard Recordings – tracks such as ‘Bad Times for the Hare Krishnas’ and the brilliant ‘Man on the Corner’ reference south London life. Their first album ‘Bob & Veronica Ride Again’ came with a 100-page novella, with their sophomore effort ‘Me & Home James’ following earlier this year. This show promises a chance to catch their off-kilter guitar pop in a local setting. www.mortonvalence.com http://www.myspace.com/mortonvalence MADAM After playing a superb set at our one-off night at the Brixton Windmill a few years back, we are happy to welcome six-piece Madam back on the bill. Fronted by the charismatic chanteuse Sukie Smith, Madam's noirish, nocturnal music brings to mind PJ Harvey, Portishead, and Cat Power at their smokey, intoxicating, late night best. The band have released two critically acclaimed albums, 'In Case of Emergency' and 'Gone Before Morning'; have collaborated with artists such as Swervedriver's Adam Franklin; and have completed a soundtrack for the debut feature film of Neophyte Films, 'Hush Your Mouth' - an "urban ghost story". www.madam.org.uk http://www.myspace.com/madammusic THE DOOMED BIRD OF PROVIDENCE Mysterious collective The Doomed Bird of Providence sound as if they were spawned fully born from a tiny town in central Australia. In reality, they hail from the rather nearer environs of Chelmsford, and feature an ex-member of Extreme Noise Terror. They utilise accordion, ukulele, bass, guitar, fiddle, and droning violin together with Mark Kluzek’s raw voice to narrate macabre stories of the early convicts and settlers down under. Recalling a tradition of Australian Gothic which stretches from the Birthday Party and The Scientists to The Drones via The Dirty 3 and Nick Cave, the band have released two truly captivating and original albums of murder ballads on the Mancunian label Front and Follow. www.frontandfollow.com www.lailyrecordings.wordpress.com ROME PAYS OFF When Pennyblackmusic hosted nights many years ago at the much-missed Spitz venue in North London, we had the privilege to invite an endlessly inventive band by the name of Rothko to play more than once. Atmospheric, evocative, and twin-bass led, there was nothing else around that sounded quite like Rothko. Since then, founding members Mark Beazley (who runs the Trace Recordings label) and Crawford Blair have now returned with a new project, Rome Pays Off, in which gentle melodic lines and a bass driven intensity verging on white noise merge with live manipulation and recorded samples to mesmerising effect. Get there early to catch their set. www.tracerecordings.com Saturday 29th October 2011 The Half Moon Herne Hill Doors 8pm, first act 8:15pm £5 adv from wegottickets.com, £6 on door Nearest Station: Herne Hill Overground (5 minutes walk) or Brixton Underground/Overground (20 mins walk) Herne Hill Overground 10 minutes journey from Victoria, Blackfriars, or Elephant & Castle stations Buses: 3 & N3, 322, 196, 37 & N37, 468, 68 & N68, 201 www.pennyblackmusic.co.uk www.halfmoonpub.co.uk
