intro

Brash, but dismissable second album from New York-based goth pop outfit, Cold Cave

'Cherish the Light Years' is a brash full-on goth pop album that takes some time to ripen. Since in goth music, vocals are allowed to sound like wailing cries, Cold Cave's Wesley Eisold (sic) comes across as a comparatively happy bunny. Let me stress that in goth it's seen as cool to appear miserable. 'The Great Pan Is Dead' kick-starts the album and from thereon it never slows down, the most noticable progression being into the more elaborated compositions of the last five tracks. 'Underworld USA' starts Round Two in this Southern Death Cult race for the ultimate goth award. On 'Underworld USA' Cold Cave alas come clean and admit they've always been into Spandau Ballet. Cold Cave are a very peculiar band. 'Alchemy And You' portrays Cold Cave as straightfoward popsters with a sense of dark humour. It's almost as if there's a pun to their band name that I fail to understand, it's Cold Cave not Coldplay. They are equally dismissable though.
