intro
Classic-sounding debut British single from sensitive New Zealand-born singers-songwriter, Brooke Fraser
Brooke Fraser, released her first single, ‘Something In The Water’, in the UK, at the end of March, and then her full release ‘Flags’ which is her third album, but first to hit the UK, in April. Now 26, the New Zealander, who had already been signed to a recording contract with Sony, at eighteen, at which time she had released her first album in her native home, found that her record went platinum eight times. After touring in support of David Bowie and John Mayer, the lovely voiced, singer-songwriter worked on second album, 'Albertine'. This moniker refers to a Rwandan orphan that Fraser has sponsored. She visited the country in ’05 and set forth efforts to raise much-needed funds through the World Vision Project. It may have been Fraser’s “less than affluent” childhood that fueled her desire to help those less fortunate. Musically, Fraser felt an immediate attraction to classic American songwriters and was stopped dead in her tracks the first time she heard James Taylor. Her love of songwriting was also inspired by Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison. Fraser takes seriously, a sense of place, and also has the ability to bring alive those universal feelings that many non-artists find difficult to put into words. Her sonorous vocals ring with effervescence and her sharp, pop sensibilities infuse the lyrics with heart. ‘Something In The Water’ is a song that combines all of these attributes and arouses the listener’s appetite for more Brooke Fraser. The title does not simply refer to finding unique qualities in a loved one. She is in the process of working with New York’s Charity Water organization, which hopes to provide clean water to those most needy within the next 40 years.
