intro
Atmospheric and haunting electronica on excellent debut album from Norwegian duo, Metamorfozy
Metamorfozy is the brain child of Rune Lindbeak and Oyvind Blikstad, and the musical vehicle with which the two Norwegian club pioneers plan on achieving their next goal. Blikstad has a reputation as a border line obsessive when it comes to sound recording, being someone that never leaves the house without something to record on, and has drawn comparisions with the late, but insane genius Martin Hannett. It is definitely a good compliment though. The pair come from the electronic dance scene of the 80’s and 90’s. They have moved things well and truly on with ‘Decasia’, but at the same time have certainly managed to keep a foot in the door of their old haunts with tunes like ‘Theme from Metamorfozy’ and ‘Towliness’. 'Decasia' has been self-described as the soundtrack to a film that has not yet been made, which is a perfect way to sum this fine collection up. It is ultra chilled and ambient, but never moves more than a stone's throw away from their electronic roots with subtle bleeps and synth-led numbers that are doused in strings and atmosphere. Tracks like ‘Ivalo’, ‘In Those Breaths’ and ‘Fata Morgana’ give off that beautiful almost fairy tale like quality that seems to seep out of Scandinavia. It's cold yet comforting at the same time – think the bleakest moments of Sigur Ros, but only that you’re being hugged while hearing them. The overall use of sounds and building up of the mood throughout ‘Decasia’ give the impression of it all being very minimalist, but it isn’t at all so. Dreamy and magical throughout, this is a delight to listen to and really does these two fantastic producers/music pioneers justice.
