intro
Enthralling tenth album of garage rock from Chicago-based band, Eleventh Dream Day
‘Riot Now!’ is the tenth album of Eleventh Dream Day. Recorded mostly in first takes, it is the first album since 2006 of this band who are now considered the elder statesmen of the Chicago scene. ‘Damned Tree’ opens the album. It is very dirty and lo-fi in sound, and sounds like it was recorded in a garage. It starts off sounding like the Troggs’ Wild Thing’ recorded by Jimi Hendrix and becomes increasingly more psychedelic as it progresses. ‘Cold Steel Grey’ comes over sounding like a messy Fall and has some groovy organ in the background, while ‘Satellite’ is a very tight new wave number. ‘That’s What’s Coming’ has a clean backing vocal from singer and guitarist Rick Rizzo and is sung in a story-like manner. It also features some softer backing vocals which don’t drown out the main vocal, and it all ends with some perfect harmonies and guitar licks. ‘Divining For Water’ is like an oddball Robyn Hitchcock number. Co-vocals from Rizzo’s fellow guitarist, Janet Beveridge Bean, give it an easy listening feel. ‘Tall Man’ in contrast is again Fall like with shouted vocals from Rizzo, and also has a psychedelic organ to fruit it up. ‘Sonic Reactor’ has more of a Neil Young groove, while Rizzo’s vocals on it become increasingly angry and intense as they move on. ‘Away With Words’ is a comedown number, sounding like an American Magic Numbers until the gritty guitars kick in. ‘Maybe This Time’, which closes the album, is reminiscent of Stereolab and has a cool groove to match. ‘Riot Now!’ is a thoroughly enthralling experience.
