Fine debut album from promising Texan noise pop/shoegazing three piece, Ringo Deathstarr
This is the debut album from promising Texan noise pop/shoegazing three piece, Ringo Deathstarr, which consists of Elliott Frazier(guitar, vocals), Alex Gehring (bass, vocals) and Daniel Colborn (drums). It starts off with 'Imagine Hearts', which doesn't sound quite right and begins abrasively before a Ride-style loop takes us further into its journey, which is like the Cocteau Twins or My Bloody Valentine played at the wrong speed. 'Do It Every Time' is much stronger and reminiscent of the Jesus and Mary Chain with its layers of textured guitars and lush female backing harmonies from Gehring. 'So High' is a C-86 style indie pop that recalls Talulah Gosh, while 'Two Girls' again sounds like the Cocteau Twins, but has the added bonus of a middle 8 that is like an early gothic Cure, mixed in with some Ride-like grooves. 'Kaleidoscope' is like a more chunky Slowdive, while 'Day Dreamy' sounds like lo-fi 'Darklands'era Jesus and Mary Chain. 'Tambourine Girl' in contrast is much more gritty and has a dirty sound that recalls the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. 'Chloe' comes over like a grungy Cure, while Frazier's vocals on it have an element of Jim Reid. 'Never Drive' and 'You Don't Drive' are like latter era Jesus and Mary Chain when they became intelligent dance music for the alternative generation. 'Other Thing' is a dark indie pop number and brings to an end this very fine album.
