intro
Atmospheric debut single from under-rated former Boy on a Dolphin front man, John Reilly
‘Deep and Blue’ is the debut single from the forthcoming first solo album from Liverpool-born and now Sheffield-based singer-songwriter, John Reilly, the former singer with the critically-acclaimed, but under-heard Boy on a Dolphin. It relies unfortunately a little too heavily on weak rhyming-sounding couplets such as “The damage is done/Yet still the clouds evade the sun” and “When my journey is through/I still believe in you.” This is a shame as Reilly’s slow-paced, crystal-sounding vocals in this hymn to a lost former girlfriend who he will always love are otherwise genuine and sincere. He is also matched by some superbly atmospheric playing from his co-songwriter, Vancouver musician Lewis Nitikman, on resonating piano, and Richard Hawley’s guitarist Shez Sheridan with brushes of lap steel guitar. ‘Deep and Blue’ offers much, the odd shaky lyric aside, for the album which will come out early next year.
