intro
Brisk-sounding indie guitar rock on fourth album from New Jersey-based group, Screaming Females
Starting with the echoing crunch of a steel-wool power chord, underlaid with a bouncy bass line, New Brunswick, New Jersey trio Screaming Females have laid down an 11-track tribute to the sounds of indie rock. Frontwoman and guitarist Maria Paternoster’s muscular warble owes something to Siouxsie Sioux, while her fleet-fingered guitar playing and armada of distortion-producing pedals and stomp-boxes conjure memories of Dinosaur Jr. and other college radio volume dealers (another influence, Neil Young, whose squalls of noise were paid tribute in a cover of ‘Cortez The Killer’). Bassist Michael Abbate;s clean and nimble fingering and drummer Jarrett Dougherty’s direct, no-frills approach also add a 1980s post-punk thrust to ‘Castle Talk’, but it’s Paternoster’s blazing guitarwork that will stick in most listeners’ minds, cloaking songs like ‘New Kid’ in a blistering crunch, emitting a penetrating wail at the end of ‘I Don’t Mind It’ or the relatively restrained ‘Wild’. The album also boasts some ferocious choruses - the one on put-down anthem ‘Sheep’ sounds a lot like something River Cuomo might cook up. ‘Deluxe’ proves to be the odd song out, a short ditty full of echoey strum that leads into the finale ‘Ghost Solo’ with its plucky intro and squiggling fizz. A brisk work at 36-minutes, ‘Castle Talk’ should be a heady listen for anyone with a fondness for guitar rock.
