intro
Solid black metal on second album from fiery Ukrainian rockers, Blood of Kingu
Ukrainian black metallers Blood of Kingu start things off a bit moodily on ‘Herald of The Aeon of Darkness’, with hand percussion, reverberating metal and an echoing drone in the distance, but then it’s time to tear out of the gate with screaming guitar and crunching beats in hot pursuit of the hoarse bellows of Roman Saenko on ‘Those That Wander Amidst the Stars’. Sanko’s metal pedigree includes slavic metallers Drudkh, ambient project Dark Ages and far-right black metallers Hate Forest. Fortunately his inspiration seems to have gone back in time, and Blood of Kingu’s focus is allegedly on ancient Indo-Sumerian myth. Fans of H.P. Lovecraft will also note C’thulu, The Old Ones, Yog-Sothoth and other creatures of his invented mythos crawling through the song’s lyrics. While the band ably waves the flag for non-Euclidian horror with its angry buss, it really shows what it’s capable of with a stellar cover of Beherit’s ‘Gates of Nanna’. Kicking off with some Tibetan chants, chopping chords and Yuriy’s militaristic drum rolls, Saenko offers up some whispered incantations before the band razes things flat with some guitar shredding. A very solid entry in the ranks of occult black metal.
