intro
Fine combination of garage rock, prog, soul and blues on debut solo album from former Sonic's Rendezvous Band singer Scott Morgan
Scott Morgan has sung and played guitar in bands in his native Ann Arbor in Michigan since 1962. He fronted the Rationals between 1962 and 1970 and the Sonic's Rendezvous Band between 1975 and 1980. Although they only released one 7 inch single, 'City Slang', in their lifetime, this is his most famous band as it also featured on guitar Fred "Sonic" Smith from MC5 and on drums Scott Asheton from the Stooges. There has since been renewed interest in the Sonic's Rendezvous Band, including a six CD box set of demos and live recordings in 2006. 'Scott Morgan' is his debut solo album. It starts with 'Something About You upon which Scott uses a husky deep vocal similar to that of Joe Cocker, while the backing has the bluesy feel of the Rolling Stones. 'Fallin' for Ya' has Who-like swagger to it, while Scott's vocal on it this time sounds like that of David Bowie. 'She's Not Just Another Woman' has the feel and delivery of a 70's rock ballad. 'Summer Nights' is more garage based and has a Roger Daltrey-like vocal. 'Since I Lost My Baby' has a smooth flow to it and Scott sounds on it like Iggy Pop doing a Frank Sinatra cover. 'Lucy May' and 'Mississippi Delta' are both prog numbers and a strong combination of Led Zeppelin and Love. 'Do I Move You?' is a slow Stones-like blues number and 'Memphis Time' is a solid rocker. 'Bring It on Home to Me' is a classy cover in a blues style of the old Sam Cooke numner. The album ends with 'Highway' which is like a Stooges workout. 'Scott Morgan' is a fine album in which this still under-rated singer and guitarist displays many of his influences.
