intro
Pleasant-sounding, but unexceptional debut EP from Austalian-born and now British-based singer-songwriter Eliza Jaye and the her band the Tarts
Coming from Australia and relocating to England never did anyone any harm. Just look at this very reviewer sitting typing this up. Eliza Jaye and the Tarts are a pleasant listen indeed; Eliza’s vocals come across latter day Kristin Hersh and the band underlay her world wise delivery with a cool blend of Americana, folk and a splash of college rock guitar. It’s not a groundbreaking listen in any way but of the four tracks on offer the title track finds its head easing above its siblings here. Here Eliza shows some of that Aussie spunk as she “get’s in another round” and with the help of her sister Anna on violin she really brings this EP to life. But with the space for new female singer songwriters becoming incredibly saturated over the last few years and the chance for breaking through to the mainstream minimal to say the least, just like me, I have a feeling that Eliza Jaye maybe wanting to return to Australia tail between legs thinking perhaps this immigration thing is not the fantastic idea it seemed in the first place.
