intro
Captivating second compilation in the 'Bustin' Out' series, which in this instalment focuses on 1982 and largely on the pioneering electronic groups of that year
A couple of months ago, I wrote a review of the first volume in the 'Bustin’ Out' compilation series, a volume that contained 14 tracks from the first post punk era 1979-81. The next instalment is already out, and this time we get treated to 15 tracks from 1982, a year when the alternative music developed at a rapid pace, which is very audible on this CD. A quick glance at the track list tells me that the compiler, Mike Maguire, has chosen to focus on the electronic side of popular music, which comes as no surprise really, as the subtitle of the compilation is 'New Wave to New Beat'. The album kicks off with one of the more well-known acts here, Die Krupps, whose industrial take on electronic music influenced a lot of bands in the early 80’s, and then we go from funk to synthpop to new beat to hip hop to electronica and onwards. Bands like ESG, Man Parrish, Front 242, Shriekback and Colourbox are among the contributors here, and even though some of the songs here had me reaching for the remote, I must say that it is a great compilation, and just like the first one, it’s a very good introduction to the roots of pop music, especially the more electronic side of it.
