intro
Pleasantly downbeat merging of electronica and folk on fifth album from French summery pop act Double U
Franck Rabeyrolles’ Wool Recordings is best known for releasing the records of Estonian folk-jazz-electronica-poppers Collage, but he’s a recording artist in his own right. His latest album, No. 5, is ‘Pineapple Dream’, and despite the tropical title it’s a pleasantly downbeat work. Like Collage, his work under the Double U name blends electronica with folk, but the main ingredient is the sort of summery pop produced by outfits like Stereolab (whose Laetitia Sadler offers some wordless vocals on the title track), the High Llamas, Cornelius and more melancholic combos like Grizzly Bear and Monroe Mustang. Rabeyrolles’ gentle pace may also remind some folks of Calexico, particularly on the title track, with its slowly strummed guitar and brushed drums. ‘I Made Up My Mind’ offers some bouncier drums-in-a-can for those who like their electro-pop in a 1980's vein, an atmosphere abetted by the boy-lost-girl lyrics. Rabeyrolles’ laconic vocals also make a good fit for the slackererist ‘Whatever’, which also features more retro electronic percussion. On the other end of the spectrum are organic-sounding songs like the rainy-day ‘Breathing In The Wind’, with its sadly sawing violin and whispering female narrative. ‘Pineapple Dream’ sometimes trips back to the hazy indierock 1980s - the guitar into of ‘Deconstruction’ will probably remind some people of drum-machine-era Jesus and Mary Chain, even if the rest of the tune is strictly in Stereolab territory. Taken in the full dose, ‘Pineapple Dream’ is the ideal album for when the weather isn’t nice enough to go the beach.
