intro
Absorbing electronica/dance rock on debut album from Kohib, the brainchild of prog-influenced Norwegian musician Øyvind Andreassen
In recent months I have developed a tendency toward Scandinavian artists. I am not sure why. Well, I do know why. I love the place, would like to be there right now and 90% of the music I’ve heard from there is brilliant. Fresh, new, otherworldly and just generally great, Kohib has been described as making “groovy, intelligent, dancey music” and does not disappoint there. Intensely atmospheric with shades of early 90’s dance, straight up electro and an almost prog rock feel about it in some places, the tunes really have a life of their own. Kohib is the brainchild of Norwegian Øyvind Andreassen. Listing the likes of Radiohead, Portishead and Pink Floyd as influences it is not hard to see that Kohib is far more than just some guy making tunes on his laptop at the back of some trendy bar. There is a real depth to everything on here, from the playful bass line on ‘Tales from a Nomad’ to the inner city ambience of ‘Hear This’ and ‘Your Place in Space’ which definitely have a Portishead-meets- Massive Attack aura about them. It really is the sort of music that is absorbing right from the start. ‘Push Me Down’ really encapsulates the progressiveness on show in this album getting bigger and bigger and better and better as it builds and builds until everything kicks in and you’re held mercy to it’s all encompassing beats. Yet another influence is clear on ‘My Command’ which reeks to high heaven of Ladytron, which is a massive compliment, and one I hope will make folk sit up and check out Kohib. Away from the ambience of ‘Dogs Don’t Bite’ and ‘Hear This’ the album progresses as it goes along, most notably on ‘Construction’ which bounces around and would get any late night party in any club in the world on its feet. If you are into you atmospheric and deep, deep electro tunes you will love Kohib. This is a superbly complete and rounded album that builds and builds and will see you through any night.
