intro
Latest split vinyl only release from the Too Pure Singles Club which, featuring New Zealand act Die! Die! Die! and London-based band Friendship, reveals itself to be a record of two divisive halves
I’ve followed New Zealand’s Die! Die! Die!’s progress or lack thereof ever since they played a show in my native Margate a few years back when they toured the United Kingdom. The slow build intro of 'We Build Our Own Oppressors' promises great things but when the song proper kicks in it sounds as if it could have come from any number of up and coming Shoreditch hipster bands that never get anywhere. As a taster for the band's upcoming album I fear the worse for the band. There is so much energy here but it just fizzles out as the song fades and I wonder why I cared in the first place. Saying that it sounds like it would be great fun live. Much more exciting on this Too Pure Singles Club release is Friendship, a band who actually do hail from London. 'Lifeguard' is a brilliant party tune which hammers along at the same pace as Die! Die! Die!‘s effort but with a looser edge and a hint of African flavour in the guitars. I would not hesitate to put this on a mix tape for a girl I have the hots for and you know what, I would be confident to score. I can’t wait to hear more of this band. And at the end of the day that is exactly what a split 7” should do; leave you wanting more.
