intro
Familiar-sounding, but enjoyable good-time debut album from the Bundles, the long-term side project of Jeffrey Lewis and the Moldy Peaches' Kimya Dawson
When you hear that a band featuring Jeffrey Lewis and Kimya Dawson has gotten together and written some songs, you might have a pretty good idea of what the resulting album will sound like. And depending on how you feel about those expectations, you will/won’t be disappointed. By that I mean, you will be if you don’t like that sort of thing, but you won’t be if you do. It lives up to expectations, is what I’m trying to say. Personally, I’m a great lover of this kind of stuff. This self-titled debut from the Bundles sounds like a group of friends getting together and having fun writing songs – and the fact that the band has existed since 2002 would seem to confirm that this is really a hobby that the members have now decided to document. With the boy/girl duelling vocals, and Kimya Dawson as a major member of the band, comparisons with the Moldy Peaches are probably inevitable, but taken on their own terms the Bundles are a really entertaining, fun band who have written a really enjoyable collection of pop songs, and while it may not be stepping too far from familiar grounds for these musicians, when it sounds this good who really cares?
