intro
Initially harsh, but ultimately very impressive second album from loud French post rock trio, Marvin
Seeming like a ghost train ride at first, Marvin soon enough get their grip on all matters named mathematically rock. Post-rock to be exact, Marvin catches one on the wrong foot initially, kicking off as they are with blistering riffs and breaks. Marvin scream out loud from their stronghold somewhere remote in punky France. The band struggles through a couple of tracks before the coin drops. 'Hangover the Top' does serve as a hint of what should be expected though. They´re like AC/DC adjusting the voltage for their own good, not shy of drawing in electro breakbeat effects. The sequencing to the album tracks is very unorthodox, and doubtful if you insist. The wall of sound smacks you in the face and the only reason that one could continue to endure listening to this harsh effort would be Marvin's tight and competent performance from moment one. In case you needed a soundtrack to France winning the Grand Schlamm, here you have it. They, however, persevere relentlessly no matter what. Marvin's grand pastiche of rucking and mauling snare battles results in a truly majestic track on ´Moustache 34´. Pounding drums set the pace for an enormous experience. If vocoder rhymes and bolt-throwing guitar chords aren't really enough to build your taste, then at the close of play Marvin throw in a Brian Eno cover to win you over. ´Here Come The Warm Jets´ is not a cover chosen at random. As a matter of fact, you will hear the chords ringing in your ears well before the track actually comes on. Again as a matter of fact ´Hangover The Top´ builds towards exactly that momentum. This album is a grand way to test one´s eardrums. Marvin may only consist of a few musicians but the racket of noise hints at the grand army behind these nine tracks. Turning deafness into a virtue, Marvin achieve much with little means. This is, Chicken Skin Music, no matter how loud it is.
