intro
Primitive and unsatisfactory-sounding punk rock on debut album from Brisbane-based band, Kitchen's Floor
Brisbane has been responsible for some truly great bands over the years. The city still has a vibrant alto scene centred around groovy suburb The Valley with its string of cool bars and music venues such as The Zoo and The Troubadour. Kitchen’s Floor’s debut album lacks the melodic punk skills of the Saints or the seminal brilliance of the Go-Betweens’ indie magic. Whilst it is harsh to expect anyone to be able to compare favourably to arguably Brisbane’s two finest musical exports, it is true to say that Kitchen’s Floor would struggle to compare to most, such is jerky and fractured nature of their songs. The album boasts 11 tracks, but clocks in at a breathless 18 minutes and 24 seconds and as such none of the songs seem fully formed. The lyrics are limited and often repetitive such as on 'Left' and 'Twenty-Two', while the music is like a primitive rock n roll racket. It is similar to some of the Beatnik Filmstars’ early songs in the seemingly unfinished feel, but lacks the charm of the aforementioned Bristol group. Despite all the above it may be premature to dismiss Kitchen’s Floor just yet as if they can expand upon their basic formula and create a canon of more complete songs they may realise the kind of cult following that kindred spirits like the Fire Engines or the Vaselines once enjoyed. I don’t think, however, that the Go-Betweens crown is likely to come under threat any time soon
