Passionate and raw-sounding post rock on latest vinyl single from Scottish band, We Were Promsied Jetpacks
Scotland's We We Promised Jetpacks bring yet more of their post punk sounds to the public domain with double A-sided vinyl single, ‘It’s Thunder and It’s Lightning’/Ships with Holes will Sink’. Both tracks come from their debut album ‘These Four Walls’ which was released last June. Having built up a great following through relentless touring and their passionate and raw recordings, We Were Promised Jetpacks are set to make bigger waves yet in 2010. Listening to these two tunes it is not hard to see what the fuss is all about. ‘It’s Thunder and It’s Lightning’ builds and builds, starting out with an intense broody feel that seems to continue growing until it becomes almost orgasmic as it reaches its peak. But then somehow it still carries on going even longer with its punching and clynical drums and fuzzed up bass before disappearing into nothing. Patience is the key on this tune. This is a band that deserve your time and full attention and if these songs are anything to go by they definitely don’t need to demean themselves by shouting and screaming and throwing all sorts of gimmicky ideas around to get said attention. ‘Ships with Holes will Sink’ has a slight indie-dance beat about it. Think of a lo-fi Bloc Party with one of the Proclaimers singing. Only it sounds much better than that metaphor. If it is possible to have upbeat shoegaze then We Were Promised Jetpacks have achieve this oxymoron. A lot of the album was recorded live rather than each member recording his parts separately and using plenty of studio jiggery pokery. This really comes through in the band's playing. The passion with which We Were Promised Jetpacks play resonates through the tunes so wonderfully and it’s this that will set them above the rest.
