Billing itself as 'an anthology of hymns and spiritual songs' this compilation could equally describe itself as 'balm for the soul' without a hint of a raised eyebrow from Trading Standards. A contemporary take on religious music tends to include one of the following: a gospel choir, some bland Christian rock outfit or Cliff Richard. None inherently awful (although Cliff's 'Lord's Prayer' medley from a few Christmases back...); all just a little bit cliched. 'Come O Spirit!' keeps things simple, weaving its magic with spare, country-ish instrumentation and often-beautiful voices - and not a lot else. Regardless of your thoughts on the nature of existence of the Holy Trinity, we defy you not to sit there bewitched by the spectral 'Kyrie' or gently enveloped in a golden reverie by 'I Sought The Lord'. Varying the tempo might have have broken the lulling pace a little, plus the male vocals verge on ordinary from time to time but the songs are the stars here and, by and large, they glow. There are few albums that could miraculously lift you out of the toxic malaise of a weapons-grade hangover AND accompany you as you walk up the aisle on your wedding day, but this is one of them. Cherish it.
