intro
Perfect indie pop on second album from 80's influenced German act My Laundry Life, the moniker for Andre Daners
'How to Wallow in Shame' is the second album from My Laundry Life, the project of German musician Andre Daners. It will appeal to fans of the Postcard Records label and of bands such as Aztec Camera, the Smiths and the Go Betweens. And for me, it is one my favourite albums of the year. It starts off with 'Money Greedy', which is a jangly number with lush, strummed guitar and a big sound. It is a song for these times indeed. 'Garden of Delight' is not a cover of the track by the Mission and is an 80's-influenced joyous number again with a massive sound. 'Compensation' is reminiscent of Aztec Camera in its feel and drive, and, infectious in its melody, is guaranteed to leave you with a big smile. 'Stones' has New Order-style keyboards and jangly guitars to match. It is as powerful as anything played by Johnny Marr. 'Be Yourself' is a big slice of indiepop, loud and proud and as heartfelt as the Smiths or Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. 'Soul Boxes' opens with big drums that recall those of the Smiths on 'Reel around the Fountain', while Andre's vocals, which are crisp, intelligent and fresh, sound a lot like those of Steve Wynn. 'You'll Be Ignored' is an arms-in-the-air proud anthem and indie pop at its best. The next track is European flavoured. Acoustic guitars wash over it and, a song to sing a long to, it sounds a lot like Morrissey's 'Our Frank'. 'Massacre Street' is played on the banjo, and Andre again sounds on it like Steve Wynn. 'A Crystal Morning' is as perky as the best work by the Smiths, not that there is anyn such thing as a bad Smiths track. It ends with 'The Town Song', which is downbeat and has fresh crispy guitar. A lovely record and an easy choice for an album of the year.
