Ste McCabe - Murder Music

Last year, Manchester’s premier queer punk Ste McCabe, released his first album, 'Hate Mail', and when I wrote about it here on Pennyblackmusic, I drew comparisons to both Helen Love and the Ramones, comparisons that still feels relevant when his second album, 'Murder Music', now hits the shelves of your local record shop. But with that said, I think that there is a difference between the songs on 'Murder Music' and the ones on the debut, and it took me a while to realize what that difference was. But to put it bluntly, the songs are all in all not as good as the first time around. I get a feeling that Ste has focused even more on the lyrics on his sophomore album, and that is actually what he does best. He continues to sneer at homophobia and religions (among other subjects), and just looking at the sleeve gives you an idea of his political agenda (the front sleeve shows a photo of the Pope, and the back sleeve a picture of Ste dressed up as Hitler). Two of the tack tracks on the album also consists of samples from various religious leaders speaking of homosexuals as sick people, and both end with Hitler shouting “Sieg heil!”. Well, you can’t say Ste that Ste has not gone all the way… But even though the music was better on the first record, I still like Mr McCabe, most of all because he fights for a good cause. Keep up the good work, Ste!
