intro

Fragile Americana on outstanding second album from innovative French outfit, Le Loup

Even to a close follower of lo-fi indie music from all corners of the world, the current crop of southern French pop sensibility probably still must come as quite a surprise. 'Family', the second album from Le Loup, is, however, way too precious to be ignored. Fragile acoustics and pretentious yet honest lyrics that revoke mid 1990's Americana set the tone. Diction and phrasing usually give away the origin and Le Loup is no exception, yet the very choice of words and the understanding of verbs and nouns is a good compensation. All this set aside, on their very own terms Le Loup challenges their rivals GaBlé from Normandy. Le Loup hail from the Gascogne where a certain Henry once ruled in the 13th to 14th. Century. Melodies dating back to this heritage linger on in long lost Celtic traditional tunes. Parts of this show up on 'Family', but Le Loup's predominant roots are in Americana. The group's balladeer tradition makes this album stand out amongst others. 'Family' contains intelligent indie folkrock. Thoroughly recommended to anyone who keeps an open mind.
