intro
Overtly melancholic and downright miserable sixth album from gloomy San Diego-based group Black Heart Procession, who have drawn comparisons with Nick Cave, Tindersticks and Interpol
If you want good time party music at a Wedding, you put on ABBA. If you want to relive your school days you put on some cheesy 80’s electro-pop. If you want to stay set the right bedroom mood you put on Bjork’s 'Debut' and if you want to contemplate break-ups, death and the less fun aspects of life then The Black Heart Procession’s new LP, 'Six', fits the bill as much as any other. Formed in San Diego by Tobias Nathaniel and Pall Jenkins back in 97, The Black Heart Procession have specialized in dark music, drawing comparisons with similar artists such as Nick Cave, early Tindersticks and fellow Americans Interpol. 'Six' is unoriginally the band’s sixth LP and shows no deviation from the above reference points, save for the standout track 'Drugs' which is very Lou Reed, circa 'Perfect Day', like. 'All My Steps' shows some sign of a lighter side to the band with its gentle Spanish guitar intro, but it doesn’t last. The mention of hell or the devil on practically every other track just emphasizes the disturbing nature of this record and titles like 'Wasteland' (which perfectly epitomises the music), 'Suicide', 'Heaven and Hell' and 'When You Finish Me' bare testament to the difficult subject matter contained therein. So find a dark room, some chilled vodka and get miserable. This album should come with a warning – don’t listen and drive.
