Bushman's Revenge - You Lost Me at Hello
Label: Rune Grammofon
Format: CD

intro

Eclectic and adventurous-sounding second album from Norwegian jazz metal outfit, Bushman's Revenge

Bushman’s Revenge kick off ‘You Lost Me At Hello’ with a slow-moving metal riff dubbed ‘Count The Holes In Your Head’. It’s a pretty straight-forward offering, but further listening reveals a band unafraid to journey far from conventions of time and tone. ‘Boelehoegda Rock City’ starts simply enough, but soon drummer Gard Nilssen is speeding things up, dragging his bandmates –guitarist Even Helte Hermansen and bassist Rune Nergaard into a vortex of fuzzed out distortion. ‘Ginsberg’ rocks a similar vibe, but just before the album begins to sound a bit repetitive the trio wanders onto the whispering, arid plain of ‘Hell is for Hello’. That piece introduces the slow, rumbling, Sunn0)))-touched ‘King of Hello’ – all 11 minutes of it. The amusingly named ‘Ghostwriters in the Sky’ checks in with some piercing, drifting feedback before sliding into more laidback territory, brushed drumwork and booming standup bass that shares a certain kinship with the cinematic offerings of Calexico or Ennio Morricone. ‘No Sleep Til Hammerfest’ is unsurprisingly a more robust offering, but no one will mistake it for a Motorhead cover as it dances around a recognizable riff before settling down into something suitable for headbanging, then takes off again. Closer ‘Champagne for My Real Friends’ starts at an easy lope, with the warm thrum of bass, but things get a tad distorted before the band finally heads off into the sunset. The hefty tones of Bushman’s Revenge should rope in fans of Om, Boris and similar combos while admirers of offbeat instrumental groups such as Stinking Lizaveta and their kin should dig their unusual time signatures and willingness to leave convention behind. And if your favourite Motorpsycho album is their live offering in conjunction with jazzers the Source, ‘You Lost Me At Hello” should already be spinning in your home.
