intro
Excellent debut album from Birmingham-based group Seeland, the project of ex-Broadcast member tim Felton and Billy Bainbridge who was formerly in Plone
'Tomorrow Today' is the debut album from Birmingham-based band Seeland, the project of ex-Broadcast member tim Felton and Billy Bainbridge who was formerly in Plone. Both were acts on that city's mid 90s retro futuristic music scene. The album opens with 'Burning Pages', which has a cool electronic Human League sound and keyboard patterns that the Pet Shop Boys would be proud of. 'Hang On Lucifer' has an element of the 'Thunderbirds'. It is like the Super Furry Animals covered the whole of 'Sgt Peppers' and chucked out the drugs, but kept in the crazy elements and is great fun. 'Colour Dream' is like a long slow Sunday journey, while Tim's vocal has a weekend feel to it. 'Turnaround' is a Top 20 pop number like the best of the Lightning Seeds or the Pet Shop Boys. 'Captured' is a fun, summery pop number with strong guitar lines, while 'Library' has lush harmonies and the oddness of the Beach Boys at their most surreal. 'Goodbye' is a lightweight twee pop track. 'Static Object is like a commercial Joy Division or early Human League song. Some Smiths-like guitar lines are added to it with wonderful effect. 'Station Sky' is a light pop number like the Super Furry Animals at their best, while 'Call the Incredible' sounds very minimal and experimental like a BBC workshop piece and has lush keyboards that recall the Teardrop Explodes. '5 a.m.' is another keyboard-based Beach Boys track, while 'Pretty Bird', which closes the alabum, again sounds like a BBC workshop recording. An excellent album.
