intro

Confident-sounding debut album from fiery London-based indie rockers with potential mass appeal, the Wow Signal

With the rock and roll swagger of the best of 90s Brit Pop/indie rockers, the Wow Signal kick off their debut album ‘Infinity’s Lobby’ in style with ‘Purr Right’, which sounds like Reef duelling with Oasis. The title track which follows keeps up the pace of the album. There is some brilliant use of lead guitar from Paolp Kralji. A chunky helping of feedback pushes it along before its bursts into a balls-to-the-wall wail-along chorus. The Wow Signal manage to trim all the fat off their songs and leave in only what is needed. It is this approach to things that gives the band great potential. It is no-nonsense and confident stuff. ‘The Other Half of Myself’ has an almost Eastern feel to it which sits well with the driving guitar riffs which flow freely throughout the rest of the album. Singer/guitarist Andrew Mangold sings with the attitude of a man who doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone else. He gives the impression of someone who just gets up there and does it, without pretence, airs or graces. ‘They Got It Wrong’ is politically inspired, but has the quirky element of Blur. Darren Lee brings a lot to this song in particular, but throughout the album with his drumming. On the surface it is pretty straight forward, but his off beats and inventiveness brings a little spark to the music. My personal favourite song is the penultimate track, ‘All You Will Discover’ which builds up to a brilliant crescendo. When everything finally kicks in, is has an almost U2 feel to it. This is a pretty strong offering from a band who play with confidence and self assuredness. It would be interesting to see this band out on tour with a better-known band to see if they could win over the wider audience. They have the potential mass appeal of the Enemy and Kasabian, but also they have that every man element about them which us Brits seem to do pretty well at times.
