intro

Groundbreaking dubstep on debut album from up-and-coming British act, Black Canvas

Subtle roots riddims with wisdom-inspired lyrics set the tone on this melodic sidestep dubstep album. Wordwise, Black Canvas come closest to Sizzla, the fundamentalist reggae star, all in a liberal British tradition of course. On 'Rise' you'll find ample examples illustrating the wealth in the instrumentation used. Shiphorn, fiddle and what not Cuban 'són' builds the greatest surprise to be found on 'Rise' and I am sorry when I spoilt the moment there by the sheer mention of 'són'. Yet that use of latin trumpet and orchestration hints at the maturity found on this album. Better file this under anything else than dubstep or new reggae. 'Rise' captures moments of perception, contemplation and the preceding two singles, namely 'We Fear Not' and 'Broken Dreams' in hindsight serve as perfect proof of where dubstep met melody.
