intro
First rate indie pop on charming debut album from German-based group, My Laundry Life
My Laundry Life are a German-band which is fronted by Andre Daners. They have only been around for a few months, but they have produced with ‘The Art of Science’, their debut CD, an album which is a joy from start to finish and of total beauty. ‘Sons and Guns’ opens the album and is a jangly guitar number. It has an absolutely charming vocal from Andre. The whole track has an air of the early Smiths to it and is youthful and full of life. ‘Like Tomorrow' has from its very start a groove reminiscent of the Smiths’ ‘A Boy with the Thorn in His Side’. Andre’s crisp vocals sound like Gregory Webster of the Razorcuts, but more up front and not so shy. ‘Out on the Tiles’ is again like the Smiths and a perky little number which is as fresh as a new born day. Andre is a poet in the same way that Morrissey is a poet, and this is a song full of life with hints of the Cure on both bass and guitar. ‘You Feel Loved’ is reminiscent of the young Aztec Camera and, adding a banjo, is another piece of jangly guitar heaven. ‘The Harbour Lights’ is acoustic based and again absolutely charming. ‘Sunday's Best’ sounds like a Go Betweens track sung by Steve Wynn. ‘Gravity is Pulling Hard’ is smooth in sound. Andre’s vocals again sound like Wynn, while the guitars recollect a poppy Cure. ‘When Your Work is Done’ has a strong commanding vocal from Andre. The guitars on it absolutely sparkle. ‘Sway’ is acoustic based and has a firm swagger to it. ‘The Routine’ is a call to the world which again recalls the Cure. ‘I'm Screaming Out ‘, which closes the album, has a different air to the rest of the record. In the vein of Depeche Mode, it is keyboard based and soft, smooth and elegant with just a touch of guitar, A lovely album.
