intro
Downbeat, but atmospheric and individual-in-tone-instrumental soundtrack for Spanish cult film '3 :19' from former Cocteau Twins guitarist, Robin Guthrie
Those familiar with Robin's Guthrie’s past work, either in the Cocteau Twins or through his previous instrumental works, will find little to surprise them hear, but that’s not to say there isn’t a lot to like about '3:19'. What Guthrie has always been good at is building atmosphere through sound, and there’s plenty of that on this album. Granted, most of those atmospheres are quite downbeat, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want. I would suggest that if you’ve had a particularly stressful week, that maybe scheduling an hour to yourself, getting a pair of good, noise-reducing headphones, closing your eyes and sticking '3:19' on could be just what you need. I reckon come the end of this soundtrack album, you’ll be feeling as cool as a cucumber – undeniably, the Fonz of the vegetable world. This won’t be an album for everybody; I can imagine that a lot of people will find it difficult to commit to an album which doesn’t feature any vocals, and keeps a pretty sombre tone for the majority. But I think in these hectic times we live in, there’s something to say for an album which takes its time, doesn’t rush, and doesn’t try to fit in with whatever the latest "cool sound" is.
