intro
Dull second album from American new age psychedelic folk rockers Brightblack Morning Light
I saw Brightblack Morning Light play at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in 2005, and they were impressive, producing a kind of hypnotic, droning folk that often hit the spot in a live setting. For whatever reason, I’d never bothered to follow that up and buy their album, but regardless I was really looking forward to hearing this. But, I’m sorry to say that it doesn’t really deliver the goods. It isn’t bad. Tthe songs drift pleasantly by, but they don’t really have any personality. I think that you could comfortably work to this music, but you’d be unlikely to remember it. Perhaps I was just put off with the press info that came with the CD, which shows the band to be advocates of the kind of new age lifestyle that I’m never going to buy into. Furthermore, they opt for the soft option of being, as they stress on several occasions, "anti-coal and nuclear." I won’t bore you with the reasons why this is incredibly ignorant, but I will just wonder how Brightblack’s fans are going to play this album when the electricity goes off. Anyway, this isn’t the worst album in the world, but it is a little boring. And when Spiritualised and Pink Floyd are in easy reach, I can’t see why I’d want to listen to this.
