For those of you who have not heard of the award winning techno-trance DJ Paul Oakenfold, then you will have more than likely heard the many remixes that he has made for artists over the years. Such artists include, but no means are limited to, Madonna and U2 (the 'Beautiful Day' remix is included in this collection). Thus when 'The Oakenfold Collection' landed through my mailbox, the 3 CDs the compromise it landed with a weighty thud. This mammoth collection demonstrates Paul Oakenfold's ability to consistently mix excellent trance music. Despite enjoying the music by Utah Saints and KLF, I cannot admit to be being atypically appreciative of the techno genre. Having said that, this is an impressively sublime example of what all techno-trance DJ's should aim for: clear precise tracks which seamlessly blend into each other. If there is one downside to this collection, it is that - by its very nature - the tracks can be overly repetitive. While this indeed may make for a seamless experience, it does lend itself to limited diversity. Another slight detriment (and this possibly more due to the reviewer, than the album, but to whichothers may relate), was I found myself thinking back to playing WipeOut on my Play Station, because the music used in that game was not dissimilar to what I found here. Amongst this collection, I was delighted to find the remix of 'Kernraft 400' by Zombienation. Other noteworthy tracks also include the (in)famous 'Born Slippy' by Underworld. Not all will, however, be happy with some of the remixes found here, U2 purists especially may not be pleased with Oakenfold's 'Beautiful Day' mix. In all, I would say this is a fine addition to the collection of one of today’s finest techno trance DJ's. While I doubt Paul Oakenfold will find any new converts with this, this is, however, a compilation worth adding to your collection.
