intro
Reverb-drenched, but formulaic indie pop on debut album from Swedish group the Morning Paper, which has been released on Connecticut-based label Skipping Stones
Connecticut-based label Skipping Stones must have a thing for Sweden, or at least the Swedish indie scene. Previously, they have released albums by the Charade (featuring members from Happydeadmen and the Shermans) and Celestial, and now the time has come for David Kyhlberg’s project the Morning Paper to release their debut album. The press release tells me that he collaborated with two members from the Bridal Shop when he made 'It’s Getting Clearer', one of them being singer Ida Bergström, which just adds to my theory that the Morning Paper wants to be The Radio Dept, just like Swedish fellow band Mixtapes & Cellmates (but The Radio Dept’s only female member has actually left them now, so…) It is a trend that is a bit annoying. As soon as a small indie band happens to end up on the charts in Sweden, there are soon a vast amount of copy cats around, and I would like to call the Morning Paper one of them. This is reverb-drenched, distorted indie pop, with “dreamy” parts and melodic hooks. This isn’t bad at all, it’s just that I have heard a thousand times before, and I’m getting a bit tired of it. Sorry.
