intro
Dreamy and laidback, but absolutely compelling debut album from Norwegian female singer-songwriter Silje Nes
When first starting out on this whole music writing thing, I usually tried initially to get hold of all the latest punk rock and harder edged bands when I looked through potential lists. Based on several great coincidences and random selections I, however, happened to find myself skimming through the lists of potential artists for words such as 'experimental' and ‘Scandinavian’, as there seems to be something quite magical about these kind of acts too. I came across Silje Nes after discovering several other Scandinavian artists along the way, including the fantastic Husky Rescue from Finland and have been suitably pleased. For those familiar with Husky Rescue, Silje Nes has a similar dreamy, laidback style. ‘Over All’ starts off with simple bits of percussion and gently sung lyrics that swallow you up and draw you into the music. Throughout the album this Norwegian-based singer-songwriter manages to conjure images up and somehow give her listener the feeling of being in some mystical place. Various horn noises and sound effects are interspersed throughout the album and which just boggle the mind. ‘No Bird Can’ and ‘Escape’ in particular feel like the soundtrack to a dream. This ambience and the gentle female vocals set to the crazy sounds here and there makes for a really enjoyable listen. This is the perfect music and type of album to lose yourself in and is definitely an album to chill out to.
