intro
Formulaic, strictly-by-numbers girl-fronted indie rock on debut album from rising new group the Neutrinos
The Neutrinos have been described by many as a band to watch in 2007 and in the current music industry climate I can see why. Their dirty, sexy riffs are backed up by Karen, a female vocalist, who oozes style. It's exactly what the kids of today want. I can't help but feel, however, that all this is a little contrived: there are plenty of other bands out there that are already producing dirty, sexy female led rock music that not only ticks all the right boxes but crosses enough genre borders to appeal to larger audiences – The Long Blondes and Metric are two that quickly spring to mind 'One Way Kiss' walks its way through all the necessary points of reference from stabby guitar driven songs with writhing vocals to sensually sung pop ditties. It's hard for me to get into this album as I can't help but feel like I've heard it all before. There are definitely some fantastic areas on this record, but those fantastic areas could be the fantastic section of either of the aforementioned band's albums and does very little to distinguish itself from them. In a world that's full of “arty” indie groups, 'One Way Kiss' is an album that despite its various merits has enough similarities with other records to make it a record for people who have already found this music and want carbon copies to hairspray, back comb and pose their way through.
