intro
Americana-influenced indie pop on debut release from new London band, My Sad Captains
My Sad Captains hail from Camden Town, but their hearts are in America. They take their name from a poem, by Thom Gunn, and, while they have also recorded a track for a Sparklehorse tribute album, ‘Bad Decisions/Here and Elsewhere’, which is being released on both 7” and as a download, is their debut release on their own. Indie radio love them and it is easy to see why. ‘Bad Decisions’ is as happy as a very early Belle and Sebastian number, and it is just as twee , but added to this is a touch of pure Americana and lush harmonies from singers Ed Wallis and Cathy Goss which just flow all over you. If this doesn’t make you smile, then frankly you must be dead. ‘Here and Elsewhere’, the B side, is much softer and finds Ed duetting with Cathy Lucas who also sings for the band Fanfarlo, which also features ex-Tompaulin drummer Amos Memom. Tompaulin is in fact a good reference point as they too, as well as My Sad Captians, both bring a happy smile to your face. ‘Here and Elsewhere’ is very Lee and Nancy and a perfect introduction to the summer.
