intro
Flawed, but often impressive debut album from Celestial, the moniker of Swedish musician Andreas Hagman, which collects together several of his EPs
The US based label Skipping Stones Records seems to like Sweden. They released the Charade album, 'A Real Life Drama', last year, and now they have taken Celestial (or Andreas Hagman, as his mother hopefully calls him) under their wings too. Andreas has released music on English label Lost Music and some CDR’s on the small Swedish label Music Is My Girlfriend during the past year or two, and now it’s time for his debut album, an album mostly consisting of songs released on the Lost Music EP’s. Every once in a while, a record label actually mentions the right bands when listing “sounds like” on their press releases. Skipping Stones is one of them. The bands mentioned here are Ride, the Field Mice, a softer the Jesus and Mary Chain, Slowdive, various Sarah Records bands… and so on. And I couldn’t have said it better myself. The songs go from being classic tweepop ('The Boy Who Never Says Goodbye' and the title track, for instance) to being distortion-fed indiepop ('Nothing Happens', 'Twice' and 'The Sunshine of Your Smile') in just a few seconds, which is both the strength and the weakness with this album. It’s always good to get a little diversity in a record, but at the same time I am having some trouble seeing this album as a whole. It sounds more like a compilation of singles and rare tracks, which is true in a way. Maybe this is one of those records that sound better when listening to a few tracks at a time, because there are some good songs in here…
