Diverse and pleasant singer-songwriter pop from David Kitt, Rough Trade's answer to Leonard Cohen
David Kitt's new solo album, 'Not Fade Away', opens with 'One Clear Way', which is light and poppy in a commercial way. It is also somewhat scary as we don't want Rough Trade's Leonard Cohen turning into David Gray on us. 'Grey Day' is also a light pop number, while 'Up to You', upon which David sings with Romeo and Michele Stodart from the Magic Numbers, recollects Coldplay and also has some pleasant George Harrison-style guitar solos. 'Sleep' has a moody Mojave 3 country feel, but is more polished in tone. 'I Know the Reason' starts off sounding like Rocket from the Crypt's 'On a Rope' and has a vocal from David that is fiery and very angry. 'Nothing Else' in contrast begins slowly, sounding as delicate as Nick Drake, before becoming more electronica-based. 'Guilty Prayers, Pointless Ends' finds David returning to his roots, both playing an acoustic guitar and sounding like Leonard Cohen with a basic low vocal. 'Say No More' is very fast for David, too fast. A full on pop number, it is catchy nevertheless catchy some meaty hooks. 'Don't ---- With Me' is another electronica based number. It is dark in tone and has some superb grooves. 'With You' ends the album, and has the feel of a last track. It is sung in a classic Lee Hazlewood way. David's vocal comes in quite late, but this works well. 'Not Fade Away' is a pleasant album, which makes both good day and night listening.
