intro

Impressive debut album from Atlanta-based band Snowden, whose music falls somewhere between the Arcade Fire and interpol

Snowden grew from the home-recordings of Atlanta, Georgia native Jordan Jeffares who was joined by a band of musicians recommended to him by his brother; drummer Chandler Rentz, bassist Corinne Lee and guitarist David Payne. Their debut release, ‘Anti-Anti’, is somewhere between the Arcade Fire and Interpol, with a hammering rhythm section keeping the songs trundling along at a steady pace, with Jeffares' brilliant vocal melodies floating above his and Payne’s guitars. The first two tracks on the record are fantastic, with ‘Like Bullets’ immediately drawing you into the band’s sound and making you want to hear more, while title track ‘Anti-Anti’ has a brilliant sing-a-long quality to it. ‘Filler is Wasted’ has a bass-line that gets you involuntarily tapping your foot, as do many of the songs on the album. The keyboard-based ‘Victim Card’ is a nice change of pace, and builds to a last minute of fantastic harmonic guitar work. The final track on the record, ‘Sisters’, is a gentle acoustic song which brings proceedings to a brilliant end. ‘Anti-Anti’ is an album you can lay back and just listen to, enjoying every bit of it, and I can imagine it translates brilliantly to live performance. This is definitely a band to watch out for, and certainly an album worth buying.
