intro
Perfect pop from Tim Finn, one half of the Finn Brothers and former singer with both Crowded House and Split Enz
Tim Finn is one half of the Finn Brothers, and an ex-member of Crowded House, who release a live album of their farewell gig from Sydney in '96 in just over a month. Finn was born in New Zealand but has had his base in Australia since the late 70's when he found fame with his first band, Split Enz, and then side project, ALT. 'Imaginary Kingdom' finds him going back to what he does best, which is brilliant songwriting. 'Couldn't Be Done' opens the album and is its first single. It showcases a songwriter at his prime and, as happy as a summer's day, recalls the Beatles with its friendly-on-the-ear, accessible sound. 'Astounding Moon' is more moody and sounds like Neil Innes in a reflective mode. As it progresses it becomes increasingly cinemascope-sized and develops a much wider sound. 'Midnight Coma' is foot tapping, happy commercial pop at its best. 'Salt to the Sea' recalls classic Crowded House, while 'Horizon' is as magical as snow on Christmas Day to a child. 'Dead Flowers' is much more Australian in tone than the previous tracks, a bit more experimental as well, but again is great pop. 'Resting (Your Hand Lightly)' is more downbeat and low, features softly spoken lyrics, and recalls John Lennon at his most romantic. The superbly delivered 'Show Yourself' is again very much like Lennon, while 'Winter Light', which starts off sounding like 'Imagine', is piano based and slow, and also features a gentle acoustic guitar. 'So Precious' is perfect pop and it ends with the charming and calmingly elegant 'Unsinkable'.
